A Council
of Europe Campaign
September
1999 - September 2000
Preface
The human tragedy
which, in recent years, unfolded in Bosnia-Herzegovina and
culminated in Kosovo has clearly and unequivocally shown
that it is all the more necessary for European countries
to develop their bilateral relations on a basis of mutual
respect and tolerance. Better and closer relationships between
individuals and societies can only be attained through strengthening
the notion that they all share a common heritage formed
by common values. These values, do not only include material
assets like movable or immovable cultural/natural properties
or archaeological sites and monuments but also non-material
assets like religious, ethical, moral and spiritual values.
Turkey has been an integral part of the cultural values
of Europe and has contributed to them, through her interaction,
since 15th century with the geography and the political
system of Europe. Likewise, we are also proud to have inherited
some of the oldest and most valuable components of global
cultural and natural heritage.
The projects
that we have decided to launch within the framework of the
campaign entitled "Europe a Common Heritage" by
the Council of Europe, reflects the foregoing understanding
Our aim is to ensure that our children and youth will safeguard
and maintain this heritage by embracing the same ideals
Thus we shall have encouraged and motivated them to strive
towards Atatürk's goal of keeping up with the modern times.
With my best
regards,
